PM Modi Launches Rs. 12,850 Crore Healthcare Projects on Ayurveda Day, Inaugurates ESIC Hospitals to Boost Healthcare Access for Workers

New Delhi: In a landmark event aligned with Dhanvantari Jayanti and the 9th Ayurveda Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched, inaugurated, and laid the foundation stone for healthcare projects totaling over Rs. 12,850 crore at the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) today. These initiatives underscore the Prime Minister’s commitment to expanding quality healthcare services nationwide, with a significant portion dedicated to enhancing facilities for workers through the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC).

Among the new projects, PM Modi virtually inaugurated the ESIC Hospital in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, and laid the foundation stones for six additional ESI hospitals across Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh. Together valued at Rs. 1,641 crore, these ESIC projects will benefit nearly 55 lakh ESI beneficiaries and their families by improving access to advanced healthcare.

Speaking at the event, PM Modi highlighted the unprecedented strides in India’s healthcare sector over the past decade. He noted, “In the last 10 years, we have witnessed a record number of new AIIMS and medical colleges established.” Referring to today’s launches, he added that hospitals in Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh have either been inaugurated or have commenced construction.

Union Minister of Labour & Employment, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, praised the PM’s transformative vision of linking health with development, describing it as a “Sarvajan Hitaya, Sarvajan Sukhaya” model for accessible, affordable healthcare. He noted that ESIC’s network has grown significantly, now covering 674 districts and serving nearly 4 crore families, a major increase from the 2 crore families benefiting in 2014. The number of ESIC beneficiaries has nearly doubled in a decade, rising from less than 8 crore to approximately 15 crore in 2024.

Dr. Mandaviya announced that ESIC will soon be integrated with the Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), allowing beneficiaries to access healthcare services at AB-PMJAY empanelled hospitals nationwide, further broadening their treatment options.

The new and expanded ESIC healthcare facilities include:

  • Bommasandra, Karnataka – 200-bedded ESI hospital
  • Narsapur, Karnataka – 100-bedded ESI hospital
  • Pithampur, Madhya Pradesh – 100-bedded ESI hospital
  • Meerut, Uttar Pradesh – 100-bedded ESI hospital
  • Atchutapuram, Andhra Pradesh – 30-bedded ESIS hospital
  • Faridabad, Haryana – Upgraded ESIC Medical College and Hospital, expanded from 650 to 1,150 beds

The newly inaugurated 300-bedded ESIC Hospital in Indore, designed for expansion to 500 beds, is set to serve around 14 lakh insured persons and beneficiaries with modern facilities including ICU, NICU, PICU, modular OT complexes, and advanced imaging.

Notable attendees at the event included Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, J P Nadda; Union Minister of State for Ayush, Prataprao Jadhav; and other key ministers, emphasizing the government’s commitment to creating a robust healthcare network that reaches every corner of the country.
