PM Modi Launches Health Sector Projects and Country’s Largest Jan Aushadhi Kendra on Ayurveda Day

New Delhi: On the occasion of Dhanvantari Jayanti and the 9th Ayurveda Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation for a series of health sector projects, underscoring the government’s commitment to affordable healthcare and pharmaceutical innovation. The event took place at the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) in New Delhi, with Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare & Chemicals & Fertilizers, J P Nadda, and  Anupriya Patel, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, in attendance.

Among the key initiatives, the Prime Minister laid foundation stones for four Centres of Excellence at the National Institutes of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) across India. These centers will focus on advancing medical device innovation, bulk drug production, phytopharmaceutical research, and antibacterial and antiviral drug discovery at locations in Gujarat, Telangana, Assam, and Punjab, respectively.

Further supporting the “Make in India” initiative, the Prime Minister inaugurated five manufacturing projects under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme in Gujarat, Telangana, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh. These units will focus on producing high-end medical devices and essential bulk drugs, including critical care equipment and body implants.

In his address, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the nation’s health as a cornerstone of progress, citing the government’s five pillars of healthcare policy: preventive healthcare, early disease detection, affordable treatment, accessibility of medical professionals in smaller towns, and the integration of technology in health services. He highlighted the importance of new manufacturing plants in boosting advanced medicine production, including high-quality stents and implants.

Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated the country’s largest Jan Aushadhi Kendra at AIIMS New Delhi. Spanning 1,724 square feet, this new facility will provide over 2,000 affordable generic medicines and 300 surgical items at prices up to 90% lower than branded options. Operated by the Pharmaceuticals & Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI), the kendra reflects the government’s commitment to reducing treatment costs for the poor and middle class.

Highlighting the impact of the Jan Aushadhi Kendras, PM Modi noted that more than 14,000 such centers are now operational across India, saving citizens approximately Rs 30,000 crore through accessible, affordable medicine options.
