PM Modi Inaugurates Sonamarg Tunnel in J&K

Sonamarg, J&K: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Sonamarg Tunnel today, a significant milestone in enhancing connectivity and development in the region. Addressing a gathering at the event, he expressed gratitude to the laborers whose hard work and resilience made the project a reality. He acknowledged the sacrifices made, including the loss of seven laborers, and extended his condolences to their families.

“Our resolve did not waver despite the challenges,” Modi remarked, lauding the laborers’ commitment and determination in overcoming obstacles to complete the tunnel.

Transforming Connectivity and Lives

The Sonamarg Tunnel, a long-awaited project, promises to ease life for residents and travelers in Sonamarg, Kargil, and Leh by mitigating the disruptions caused by avalanches, heavy snowfall, and landslides. The tunnel will ensure year-round connectivity, particularly during the harsh winters, improving access to hospitals, essential supplies, and boosting tourism.

The Prime Minister noted that construction of the tunnel began in 2015 after his government assumed office and was completed under their administration. He highlighted its potential to attract more tourists to Sonamarg, underscoring the role of connectivity in regional development.

Modi also announced the foundation of the Jammu Rail Division and emphasized that several road and rail projects, including the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link and the Zojila and Chenani Nashri tunnels, are on track to further enhance Jammu and Kashmir’s infrastructure.

Festive Spirit Across the Nation

Acknowledging the festive atmosphere across the country, the Prime Minister extended greetings on Lohri, Makar Sankranti, Pongal, and Uttarayan. He also recognized the start of the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj, a significant cultural and spiritual event.

Modi praised the resilience of the people of Jammu and Kashmir during the challenging Chillaikalan period and highlighted the region’s transformation into a winter tourism hub.

A New Chapter of Development

Highlighting extensive infrastructure investments, the Prime Minister revealed that ₹42,000 crore worth of road connectivity projects are underway in Jammu and Kashmir, including over 14 tunnels like the Sonamarg Tunnel. He also mentioned iconic projects like the Chenab Bridge, the world’s highest rail bridge, and the Katra-Delhi expressway.

Modi emphasized the region’s rising tourism, noting that over 2 crore tourists visited Jammu and Kashmir in 2024, with a sixfold increase in visitors to Sonamarg over the past decade. Improved connectivity and peace in the region have significantly boosted local businesses and livelihoods.

Empowering the Youth and Supporting Progress

The Prime Minister underscored the opportunities created for Jammu and Kashmir’s youth through investments in education, sports, and healthcare. New institutions like AIIMS, IIT, IIM, and Central University campuses, along with 90 Khelo India Centers, are fostering talent and skill development. He also highlighted the PM Vishwakarma scheme and industrial investments worth ₹13,000 crore, creating thousands of jobs.

Modi praised the improved performance of Jammu and Kashmir Bank, whose business has grown from ₹1.6 lakh crore to ₹2.3 lakh crore in four years, enhancing access to credit for farmers, entrepreneurs, and artisans.

Vision for a Prosperous Kashmir

“Jammu and Kashmir of the 21st century is scripting a new chapter of development,” the Prime Minister declared, envisioning a future where Kashmir regains its identity as “Paradise on Earth.” He noted the vibrant transformation of Srinagar with thriving cultural hubs, bustling markets, and flourishing tourism.

Reflecting on the region’s progress, Modi emphasized that the dream of a developed India hinges on Kashmir’s prosperity. “The crown of India must shine brighter,” he said, reiterating his government’s commitment to supporting the people of Jammu and Kashmir in their aspirations.

The event witnessed the presence of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, and Union Ministers of State Dr. Jitendra Singh and Ajay Tamta, among other dignitaries.
