PM Modi Inaugurates 38th National Games in Uttarakhand

Dehradun: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 38th National Games in a grand ceremony in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, today, marking a significant milestone for the state. Addressing the gathering, he described Uttarakhand as “resplendent with the energy of the youth” and highlighted the unique significance of hosting the Games during the state’s 25th anniversary. He noted that the event, blessed by Baba Kedarnath, Badrinath, and Maa Ganga, symbolized the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat’ and showcased India’s unity in diversity.

This edition of the National Games focuses on sustainability, with the theme ‘Green Games’ being at the forefront. Highlighting the environmental focus, the Prime Minister said that trophies and medals were crafted from e-waste, and a tree would be planted in the name of each medal winner. He lauded this initiative as a step toward blending sports with ecological responsibility.

Reflecting on India’s evolving sports ecosystem, Modi emphasized the government’s initiatives, such as the Khelo India program, which has expanded opportunities for young athletes across disciplines. He underlined that tournaments like the Khelo India Youth Games, University Games, Para Games, and Beach Games have fostered a competitive spirit among the youth while promoting inclusivity. He praised Uttarakhand’s athletes for their contributions to India’s medal tallies at global events.

The Prime Minister also emphasized the broader impact of sports on India’s development, highlighting how the sports economy is creating a robust ecosystem involving coaches, trainers, nutritionists, and equipment manufacturers. He noted that Meerut alone hosts over 35,000 factories producing sports equipment, employing more than three lakh people, and added that similar ecosystems are emerging nationwide.

Speaking about India’s Olympic ambitions, Modi reiterated the government’s efforts to bring the 2036 Olympics to India. He said hosting the Olympics would create massive opportunities, from infrastructure development to boosting tourism and generating jobs. He emphasized that the National Games in Uttarakhand would similarly benefit the local economy, with an influx of spectators and tourists boosting sectors such as hospitality and transport.

The Prime Minister also praised Uttarakhand for its rapid progress, stating that it was the first state to implement the Uniform Civil Code, which he called a step toward ensuring dignity and equality for all. He linked this to the values of sportsmanship, noting that sports inspire teamwork and remove discrimination.

Encouraging athletes and spectators to embrace fitness and sustainability, Modi urged citizens to take small steps, like reducing cooking oil usage, to improve health and contribute to a healthier India. He emphasized that fitness and sports were not just activities but key drivers of a healthier and more productive nation.

The Prime Minister concluded his address by officially declaring the 38th National Games open, extending his best wishes to all the athletes competing in the event. The ceremony was attended by Uttarakhand Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Gurmit Singh, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, and several Union Ministers, alongside thousands of enthusiastic spectators.
