Piyush Goyal Chairs 8th Meeting of National Technical Textiles Mission Steering Group

New Delhi: Piyush Goyal, the Union Minister for Textiles, Commerce and Industry, and Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, emphasized the crucial need for intensified collaborative efforts between the Government and the industry to boost the indigenous development of technical textiles products. This assertion came during his chairing of the 8th Meeting of the Mission Steering Group (MSG) of the National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM) held today.

The Ministry of Textiles, under the leadership of Shri Piyush Goyal, greenlit 11 project proposals, encompassing 9 Research and Development (R&D) projects, 1 project focused on machine development, and 1 project centered on equipment development, with a cumulative value of approximately INR 103 crores. Notably, one of the approved projects is dedicated to the development of high-strength carbon fiber tailored for strategic applications, aligning with the mission to establish self-reliance in the field of Technical Textiles within India.

These projects span various application areas within the technical textiles domain, covering 2 projects for Protech, 2 for Meditech, 2 for Mobiltech, 1 for Buildtech, 2 for Smart Textiles, and 1 for Sustainable Textiles. Leading institutions and research bodies such as CSIR-NAL, ATIRA, NITRA, IIT Delhi, ICT-Mumbai, NIT-Jalandhar, and Colorjet India Ltd. are spearheading the research projects.

During the meeting, Shri Piyush Goyal reviewed the progress of different components of the National Technical Textiles Mission. This included a comprehensive review of sanctioned R&D projects, the status of applications under General Guidelines for Enabling Academic Institutes in Technical Textiles Education in India (Round-II), the implementation of Quality Control Orders by the Ministry of Textiles, patent guidelines for R&D, and outreach activities and events under NTTM, among other aspects.

The Minister of State for Textiles, Smt. Darshana Jardosh, and senior officials from various ministries and departments, including Commerce and Industry, Road Transport and Highways, Heavy Industries, Railways, Jal Shakti, Expenditure, Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Science & Technology, Higher Education, and Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, along with eminent members from the industry, were present at the meeting.
