Pani Panchayat Pakhya 2024: A Celebration of Water Governance Across Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The second phase of the Pani Panchayat Pakhya unfolded on January 24, spanning across 30 districts of the state after its initial observance in 117 Divisions on January 16. This significant event serves as a platform to recognize the substantial contributions made by Pani Panchayats and farmers in the water sector while fostering awareness about various aspects of water governance among stakeholders.

The Pakhya initiative aims to amplify the acknowledgment of the pivotal role played by Pani Panchayats and farmers in managing water resources effectively. By creating awareness at multiple levels, the event strives to enhance understanding and engagement in sustainable water governance practices.

A noteworthy feature of the Pani Panchayat Pakhya is the mobilization of Pani Panchayat Raths, equipped with Information Education Communication/Social Behavioural Change Communication (IEC/SBCC) materials and audio-visual presentations. These Raths traversed through projects, divisions, and prominent locations within districts, returning to the district headquarters on January 24, 2024. The event was made vibrant and participatory through the distribution of banners, brochures, logos, slogans, taglines, anthems, and oaths.

Districts actively participated in the Pani Panchayat Samabesha, graced by the presence of Pani Panchayat members, farmers, and key stakeholders. In conjunction with the District Level Mela on Farm Mechanisation organized by the Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Empowerment, exhibitions were conducted. The event showcased winners from various activities, including debates, essays, paintings, quizzes, and model competitions. Additionally, special recognition was accorded to one Pani Panchayat from each district for exemplary formulation and implementation of the “Integrated Irrigation and Agriculture Plan (IIAP).”

The Pani Panchayat Pakhya stands as a testament to Odisha’s commitment to sustainable water management, community engagement, and the empowerment of Pani Panchayats in steering the state towards water resilience and prosperity.
