Over 79.69 Lakh Voters to Cast their Vote on Monday in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: As the countdown begins for the fifth phase of the General Elections 2024, slated for May 20, Odisha gears up to witness a significant exercise in democracy, with a whopping 79,69,887 voters set to cast their votes across five parliamentary constituencies and 35 Vidhan Sabha segments.

According to a press release issued by the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Odisha, the voter demographics indicate a diverse electorate, with 40,33,992 male voters, 39,35,044 female voters, and 851 individuals belonging to the third gender. Notably, 2,13,129 first-time electors fall in the 18-19 age group, while 16,98,516 youths aged 20-29 years are also set to exercise their franchise.

This phase also sees participation from elderly voters, with 55,882 individuals above 85 years of age and 1,812 centenarians, reflecting a commitment to democratic participation across generations. Additionally, 1,07,823 Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), 46 overseas voters, and 10,630 service voters are expected to contribute to the electoral process.

With 9,148 polling booths, including 14 additional booths, and a significant presence of female and PwD-managed booths, efforts are underway to ensure inclusivity and accessibility in the voting process. Over 60,000 polling personnel have been deployed for smooth conduct.

A total of 40 candidates, comprising 34 males and 6 females, will contest from the parliamentary constituencies, while 265 candidates, including 224 males and 41 females, will vie for seats in the 35 assembly segments.

Speaking to reporters, CEO Nikunja Bihari Dhal highlighted the stringent security measures in place, with 102 companies of CAPF deployed, particularly in critical polling stations. Additionally, civil measures such as live webcasting, videography, and micro observers will enhance transparency and accountability.
