Khandagiri-Udayagiri Light and Sound Show Opens in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: The ancient Khandagiri-Udayagiri caves in Bhubaneswar now have a new visitor attraction, with a Light and Sound Show using audiovisual storytelling, lighting and modern technology to bring the heritage of the rock-cut caves to life.

The immersive experience was formally inaugurated at Khandagiri by Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida, who holds the Tourism portfolio. The show has been developed by the India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) in collaboration with the Odisha Tourism Department.

The presentation takes visitors through the historical and cultural legacy of Khandagiri and Udayagiri, using a combination of storytelling, light and sound. The rock-cut caves, sculptures and inscriptions feature in the audiovisual narrative, offering visitors a technology-enabled way to explore the heritage of the site.

The show will be presented twice every evening, in Odia and English. Each presentation will run for approximately 16 minutes and 7 seconds, with seating available for up to 120 visitors.

The two show slots are scheduled from 7:00 pm to 7:35 pm and 7:45 pm to 8:20 pm.

The initiative adds a technology-driven attraction to Odisha’s heritage tourism offerings, combining the archaeological significance of Khandagiri-Udayagiri with immersive storytelling. It is intended to provide visitors with a new way of engaging with one of Bhubaneswar’s prominent heritage sites.

The inauguration was attended by Ekamra Bhubaneswar MLA Babu Singh, Tourism Department Commissioner-cum-Secretary Balwant Singh, Director of Tourism Deepankar Mohapatra and other senior officials and dignitaries.
