Over 1 Crore Olive Ridley turtles hatch in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Over 1 crore baby Olive Ridley turtles hatched on the coasts of Odisha in the last few days this year.

The forest department officials are expecting that over 2 crores more baby turtles are likely to hatch on the Odisha coasts in the coming days.

Every year lakhs of olive ridley turtles congregate on Odisha coasts to lay their eggs. This year over 11.64 lakh Olive Ridley laid eggs at Gahirmatha in Kendrapara district, Rushikulya in Ganjam district, and Devi estuary area in Puri district.

While over 6.37 lakh turtles laid eggs congregated in the Rushikulya river mouth area for mass nesting this year, Gahirmatha recorded over 5.26 lakh olive ridleys during nesting season.
