Odisha’s High-Speed Corridor Project to Cut Berhampur-Jeypore Travel Time by More Than Half

Bhubaneswar: In a move to boost connectivity and cut travel time across key regions in Odisha, a review meeting chaired by Law, Works, and Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan discussed the proposed Berhampur-Jeypore High-Speed Corridor and Green Field Project. Once completed, this ambitious project is expected to reduce travel time between Berhampur and Jeypore from seven hours to just three hours, with vehicles able to reach speeds up to 120 km/h.

The high-speed corridor will feature advanced infrastructure, including tunnels at four strategic locations to safely navigate the hilly terrain and reduce accident risks. Minister Harichandan emphasized that this project will significantly enhance connectivity between major cities, mining hubs, and industrial zones, contributing to the economic development of the state. Additionally, he stressed the importance of implementing the project without disturbing the biodiversity of the region.

To minimize the ecological impact, officials have been directed to create an environmentally sensitive development plan. The Minister highlighted the need for a sustainable approach to land acquisition and forest land settlement, aiming to make the project more publicly acceptable.

The meeting brought together several key officials, including Principal Secretary V.V. Yadav, Special Secretary Deepak Das, Chief Engineer (Civil) Purnachandra Mahapatra, OBCC Joint Adviser Jay Krushna Das, and SPARC Managing Director Shubdarshi Mishra. Their expertise will be pivotal in addressing the technical, environmental, and logistical challenges of the project.

This proposed corridor represents a significant step towards reducing travel time, enhancing road safety, and fostering economic growth, while ensuring that Odisha’s natural landscape and biodiversity are protected.
