Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has unveiled an ambitious plan to revamp its agricultural marketplace by setting up 38 model mandis across all 30 districts by 2026. The initiative, aimed at modernizing infrastructure and improving market access for farmers, was announced by Co-Operation Minister Pradeep Bal Samanta on Friday.
Speaking to reporters, the minister said that while each district will get at least one mandi, larger districts will have two, bringing the total to 38. These model mandis will feature essential facilities such as clean drinking water, sanitation, electricity, restrooms, parking, and food stalls managed by women Self Help Groups (SHGs).
Earlier in the day, the design layout for the proposed mandis was submitted to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi during a review meeting. The design emphasizes clean, functional spaces that support both farmers and traders.
“This move reflects our commitment to improving rural infrastructure and strengthening the agricultural supply chain,” said Samanta.
The decision follows the state government’s earlier promise to set up cold storage units in every sub-division and convert traditional markets into well-equipped modern mandis. Since taking office in 2024, the Majhi-led administration has prioritized infrastructure development as a key pillar of its rural transformation agenda.
Officials believe the upgraded mandis will significantly improve the efficiency of crop trading, minimize post-harvest losses, and enhance earnings for farmers across the state.
