Bhubaneswar: The Ministry of Earth Sciences will install three new Doppler Weather Radars (DWRs) in Odisha to significantly improve weather forecasting operations, as announced by Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), on Monday.
During a special talk series organized to celebrate IMD’s 150th anniversary in Bhubaneswar, Dr. Mohapatra highlighted the ongoing efforts to enhance weather monitoring across the country. By 2026, a total of 126 Doppler Weather Radars will be operational across India, improving the accuracy and timeliness of weather forecasts.
Dr. Mohapatra emphasized the importance of utilizing the MausamGram website and the Mausam mobile app, which provide real-time weather forecasts through a Geographical Information System (GIS). Users can access precise weather data by entering their locality or any desired location, ensuring comprehensive coverage for diverse regions.
“Currently, 73 radars are operational across India, and 53 new radars will be added, with three new Doppler radars set to be installed in Bhubaneswar, Balasore, and Sambalpur in Odisha,” said Dr. Mohapatra.
The Doppler radar in Bhubaneswar will offer crucial data on urban flooding, artificial flooding, and air quality in the city. These advancements are expected to enhance disaster preparedness and provide valuable insights into environmental factors affecting urban life.
