Odisha to Establish Integrated Green Ship Recycling Industry Park

Bhubaneswar: Odisha is set to make a significant leap in industrial development with the proposed establishment of an Integrated Green Ship Recycling Industry Park. A high-level discussion meeting held at Lok Seva Bhawan featured Deputy Chief Minister KV Singh Deo, Industries Minister Sampad Chandra Swain, and senior officials from Neptunes Shipbuilding Company, who detailed the ambitious project aimed at leveraging the state’s extensive coastline and natural resources.

The initiative is poised to be a major economic boon for the state, with projections indicating the creation of 20,000 direct and 50,000 indirect employment opportunities. The park is expected to process 300 ships annually, produce 5 million tonnes of high-quality steel, and contribute $2 billion to Odisha’s GDP each year.

During the meeting, Deputy CM Singh Deo emphasized the importance of prioritizing local talent for skilled positions within the industry. He highlighted the need to develop the skills of the local workforce to meet the demands of the new industry. In support of this, Industries Minister Sampad Chandra Swain announced plans to establish a dedicated skill development institute that will provide training to local youth, ensuring they are well-prepared for the opportunities the park will create.

The proposed ship recycling park is set to position Odisha as a leading state in the ship recycling industry, capitalizing on its strategic location and abundant resources. Deepak, Managing Director of Neptunes Shipbuilders, and Satish, Executive Director, also participated in the meeting, expressing their commitment to the successful implementation of the project.
