Odisha to Establish Cable Landing Station in Puri, Aiming to Become a Global Digital Hub

Bhubaneswar: In a major step toward transforming Odisha into a global digital hub, the state government has initiated the establishment of a Cable Landing Station in Puri. Spearheaded by the Electronics and IT Department, this ambitious project is expected to enhance digital infrastructure, attract top-tier technology companies, and create new job opportunities.

Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja reviewed the progress of the Detailed Project Report (DPR), which is being jointly developed by RailTel and Deloitte. He stressed the importance of engaging with Hyperscalers and key industry stakeholders to ensure a future-ready and scalable implementation. Ahuja also directed the concerned authorities to submit the DPR at the earliest, with a target of completing the project within three years.

The Cable Landing Station is a flagship initiative of the Odisha government, designed to establish the state as a leading destination for digital investments. Puri was chosen as the project site due to its prime geographic location, suitable coastline, and strong infrastructure, making it an ideal hub for global connectivity.

Once operational, the Cable Landing Station will provide direct international fibre connectivity, significantly reducing internet latency and boosting speed. This move is expected to position Odisha as a key player in the global digital economy, attracting investments from Hyperscalers, Global Capability Centres (GCCs), and other enterprises.

Beyond economic benefits, the project is set to drive digital inclusion, generate employment, and support community development. The improved connectivity will also strengthen India’s position in the data-driven economy, reinforcing the state’s commitment to fostering technological innovation and growth.

The meeting was attended by Special Secretary of the Electronics and IT Department and Managing Director of OCAC, Manas Ranjan Panda, Principal Executive Director of RailTel, Zakir Hussain Siddiqui, Technical Advisor (Telecom) OCAC, Avinna Kumar Pahi, and other officials from the Electronics and IT Department, RailTel, and Deloitte.
