Odisha Strengthens Semiconductor Industry with Launch of RIR Power Electronics Facility

Bhubaneswar:In a landmark move for India’s semiconductor industry, RIR Power Electronics Ltd. has laid the foundation for the country’s first Silicon Carbide manufacturing facility at EMC Park, Infovalley, Bhubaneswar, Odisha. This pioneering project cements India and Odisha’s position at the forefront of the global power electronics market.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, alongside key figures such as Principal Secretary of the Industry Department Hemant Sharma, Principal Secretary of Electronics and IT Vishal Dev, and Director of IIT Bhubaneswar, Prof. Shreepad Karmalkar. RIR Power Electronics Ltd.’s promoters, Dr. Harshad Mehta and Bhavna H Mehta, along with senior company professionals, were also present.

RIR Power Electronics Ltd., a leader in semiconductor power electronics, supplies products globally to sectors such as railways, defense, power, transportation, aerospace, and sustainable energy. The company’s commitment to cutting-edge technology, skilled manpower, and sustainable practices will be pivotal to ensuring the facility adheres to global manufacturing standards.

The facility, which represents an investment of INR 620 crore over three years, is expected to be a major boost for Odisha’s power electronics industry, creating over 500 new jobs in research, development, and operations. This development will also bolster Bhubaneswar’s industrial ecosystem by introducing best practices, sustainable energy solutions, and advanced technology, while fostering the growth of a skilled workforce.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi hailed the new facility as a vital step toward making Odisha a semiconductor hub, stating, “This facility will not only produce world-class products but also create a wealth of opportunities for our talented youth. It will attract skilled professionals, foster local innovation, and drive economic growth.”

Odisha is one of the few Indian states with a dedicated Semiconductor Policy, offering incentives for fabrication units and supply chain companies across the semiconductor value chain. The state’s flagship O-Chip Program further strengthens its position by providing comprehensive support to semiconductor startups, companies, and academic institutions, including access to EDA tools, IPs, mentorship, and research grants.

Apart from RIR Power Electronics, several other companies have proposed investments in the semiconductor and related fields in Bhubaneswar. RIR is also in the process of establishing a technical and research collaboration with IIT Bhubaneswar, further boosting Odisha’s semiconductor industry.
