Bhubaneswar: Odisha is making rapid strides in renewable energy development by leveraging its natural resources for Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs). The state has identified 45 potential sites for PSPs, with 10 projects planned for implementation through Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs). In addition to these government-backed initiatives, private companies have also shown interest in setting up PSPs, with projects set to be awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis, Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Kanak Vardhan Singhdeo announced today.
During a high-level meeting, Singhdeo reviewed the progress of the Pumped Storage Project proposed by Sangamam Power Project Company, which had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Odisha Government during the Utkarsh Odisha Conclave. The Deputy Chief Minister reaffirmed Odisha’s commitment to green energy solutions, inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on clean fuel and renewable energy.
Sangamam Power has prepared a detailed project report (DPR) for a 1000 MW PSP at Sunki in Koraput district. The project, designed to generate six hours of peak-time electricity daily using reverse turbine technology, is expected to significantly bolster the state’s power infrastructure. The company has sought single-window clearance and government incentives to facilitate the project’s smooth execution.
The meeting was attended by Development Commissioner Anu Garg, Additional Chief Secretary (Industries) Hemant Sharma, Principal Secretary (Energy) Vishal Kumar Dev, IDCO Managing Director Bhupendra Singh Poonia, and representatives from Sangamam Power, including Director Deepak Mathur and Bhaskar Rao.
