Odisha Reviews Women-Centric Initiatives as NCW Chairperson Calls for Stronger Systems

Bhubaneswar: Strengthening women’s safety and empowerment mechanisms took centre stage at a high-level review meeting held in the presence of Vijaya Rahatkar, Chairperson of the National Commission for Women, at Lok Seva Bhawan.

The meeting saw participation from senior state officials, including Anu Garg, Chief Secretary, along with representatives from key departments such as Home, Mission Shakti, Women and Child Development, and others. District Collectors and officials from across Odisha joined virtually, reflecting a coordinated statewide review.

Officials presented detailed updates on a range of ongoing programmes, highlighting Odisha’s multi-departmental approach to women’s safety, welfare, and economic empowerment. Key initiatives discussed included Subhadra, Lakhpati Didi, Mission Shakti Cafes, POSHAN-related interventions, crèche services, and skill development programmes designed specifically for women.

Appreciating the state’s efforts, Rahatkar noted that Odisha has built strong institutional systems to address women’s issues. She highlighted the impact of flagship schemes like Subhadra and Lakhpati Didi in enhancing financial independence and leadership among women.

She also drew attention to innovative digital and social initiatives, including the Shakti App developed with UNFPA support, which strengthens response mechanisms to gender-based violence. Programmes such as ADVIKA and Shaktishree were also acknowledged for empowering adolescents and young women.

At the same time, the NCW Chairperson stressed the need for faster disposal of pending cases related to trafficking and gender-based violence. She called for stricter implementation of the POSH Act and greater convergence among departments to ensure effective delivery at the grassroots level.

Among her key recommendations was the establishment of “Tere Mere Sapne” Pre-Marital Communication Centres in every district to promote awareness, strengthen family systems, and support women’s well-being.
