Odisha on High Alert as Low-Pressure System Brings Heavy Rainfall Warning

Bhubaneswar: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a high alert as a low-pressure system intensifies over the West-Central and Northwest Bay of Bengal. According to the latest forecast, this system is set to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to North Odisha and parts of West Bengal over the next 24 hours, with the potential for sustained heavy rains for up to 48 hours.

In response to the severe weather warning, several districts in Odisha, including Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam, have been placed on high alert. Mrs. Usha Padhee, Principal Secretary of the Housing and Urban Development Department, has directed all Municipal Commissioners and Municipal Executive Officers to be on high alert and prepare for any emergency situations.

During a virtual review meeting held today, Mrs. Padhee reviewed the situation with senior department officials, district nodal officers, and municipal leaders. She stressed the importance of continuous monitoring and urged all urban areas to be fully prepared for potential impacts, including waterlogging, road damage, and other disruptions.

The Housing and Urban Development Department has instructed all Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) to activate control rooms immediately, ensure the availability of pumpsets, and remain vigilant for any emerging issues.

Senior officers participating in the review included Special Secretary Rajesh Pravakar Patil, Municipal Director Debasis Singh, Director Housing Gangadhar Naik, and Additional Secretary Rabindra Kumar Sahu. They are coordinating efforts to implement necessary precautions and manage the situation effectively.
