Odisha Manaska Explores Cultural Identity Crisis Among Odia Youth

Bhubaneswar: The sixth edition of Odisha Manaska, a community engagement platform organized by All Things Odisha, took place on Sunday, January 12, at the Safe Odisha For Her office in Saheed Nagar. The event, centered on the theme “Cultural Confidence or Identity Confusion: The Crisis of Odia Youth in a Migrant World,” brought together 30 participants from diverse fields to discuss the challenges faced by Odia youth in preserving their cultural identity amidst globalization and migration.

The discussion revolved around the struggles of maintaining cultural ties while adapting to a rapidly modernizing world. Participants shared personal stories, experiences, and insights that shed light on the dilemmas of Odia identity, touching upon issues such as the diminishing presence of Odia history and traditions in school curricula, the rigidity of certain cultural practices, and the lack of relatable modern Odia icons. They also highlighted the unique challenges faced by tribal and labor migrant communities, who often experience a gradual disconnect from their roots due to prolonged displacement.

Adding to the cultural richness of the event, the cast of the upcoming Odia film Angel unveiled its poster and shared how the movie incorporates unique cultural elements. Their presence offered an artistic perspective on the importance of cultural representation in popular media.

Prominent voices at the event included actor Partha Sarathi Ray, who reflected on his journey of reclaiming his Odia identity during his career in cities like Delhi and Mumbai. Actor-producer Swastik Choudhury shared his experiences of rediscovering Odia culture while working in Chennai, while women’s rights activist Pranay Manjari Samal spoke about the identity challenges faced by Odia students at in institutions outside Odisha. National award-winning filmmaker Sankhajeet Dey discussed the socio-cultural impacts of displacement and migration on individuals and communities. Tribal model, actor, and activist Rhea Resham Bari highlighted the struggles of tribal communities in preserving their traditions in the face of forced migration. Young participants, including Abinash Bairiganjan and Saurabh Pahi, emphasized the need for relatable cultural icons, and filmmaker Siddarth Gautam expressed concern about the declining use of the Odia language in private schools.

The participants collectively agreed on the need to foster cultural pride and inclusivity among Odias. They advocated for integrating Odia history, language, and traditions into school curricula in meaningful ways rather than through token observances. Emphasis was placed on respecting the cultural diversity of Odisha and building an inclusive identity that evolves with time. The discussions also highlighted the importance of celebrating Odia heritage in a way that resonates with the younger generation and strengthens their cultural confidence.

The event successfully created a platform for meaningful dialogue and reflection, serving as a step toward preserving Odisha’s heritage while envisioning a future rooted in cultural pride and inclusivity.
