Odisha Launches Self-Defence Training for 5,000 SHG Women in Pilot Phase

Bhubaneswar: In a major step towards strengthening women’s safety and confidence, Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida on Wednesday launched a self-defence training programme for women Self Help Group (SHG) members at Mission Shakti Bhawan.

The programme, introduced in its pilot phase, aims to train 5,000 SHG women across five districts. The launch event was attended by Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar, Chairperson of the National Commission for Women.

Addressing the gathering, Parida emphasised that true empowerment goes beyond economic independence and must include safety, dignity, and confidence. She said the initiative would equip women with essential skills to move fearlessly, make independent decisions, and actively engage in economic activities.

Rahatkar highlighted the importance of institutional support in ensuring women’s safety and capacity building, noting that such initiatives play a key role in fostering self-reliance and enabling women to contribute meaningfully to society and the economy.

The programme is being implemented by the Mission Shakti Department in collaboration with the National Commission for Women. In the initial phase, it will cover SHG members from Khordha, Cuttack, Puri, Keonjhar, and Ganjam districts.

Officials said the initiative is designed to enhance women’s mobility, improve their confidence in accessing market opportunities, and strengthen the foundation of women-led development in Odisha.
