Odisha Intensifies Post-Flood Health Measures, Senior Officials Sent to Four Districts

Bhubaneswar: With floodwaters receding in several parts of Odisha, the state government has shifted its focus to preventing disease outbreaks and strengthening healthcare services in the affected areas. The Health Department has deployed senior officials to four flood-hit districts to oversee post-flood health measures and assess requirements on the ground.

The officials have been tasked with monitoring the health situation, reviewing preparedness and coordinating with district administrations and local health authorities to ensure timely action on emerging health concerns.

Special Secretary Dr Bijay Mishra has been deputed to Baleshwar, Director of Public Health Dr Rabindra Mishra to Bhadrak, Director of Family Welfare Dr Rajendra Panigrahi to Kendujhar, and Director of Health Services Dr M. M. Panda to Jajpur.

Chief Secretary Anu Garg said the government is taking extensive preventive measures to ensure that prolonged flooding does not lead to outbreaks of epidemics or communicable diseases.

Villages that remained submerged for long periods will receive special attention for cleaning and disinfection after the water recedes. Similar measures will be undertaken in affected roads and public places to reduce health risks.

The Health Department will also keep a close watch on water-borne diseases and other communicable illnesses, while ensuring the availability of essential medicines and appropriate healthcare services.

Authorities will undertake cleaning and disinfection of drinking water sources in affected areas to safeguard water quality.

They have also been directed to ensure the quick removal of decaying food, animal carcasses and other decomposable material left behind by the floods, which could pose additional health hazards.

The department is simultaneously strengthening field-level surveillance to facilitate early detection of illness and prompt medical intervention.

The senior officials deployed to the districts will work alongside district administrations and health teams to review the availability of healthcare facilities, medicines and other essential resources.

Their field-level supervision is expected to strengthen coordination and enable authorities to respond quickly to any emerging health-related issue.

The state government said its post-flood strategy is centred on prevention, surveillance and rapid response, with the objective of protecting public health and ensuring uninterrupted access to essential healthcare services during the recovery period.
