Bhubaneswar: Responding to mounting criticism and political consensus, the Odisha government has begun the process to withdraw the proposed Bill seeking a hike in salaries, allowances, and pensions of MLAs.
The Odisha Assembly Secretariat has written to legislators in this regard, following a formal notice issued by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mukesh Mahaling, signalling the government’s intent to roll back the legislation.
The Bill, which had been passed last year, proposed a substantial revision in the remuneration of MLAs, ministers, and the Chief Minister. However, it faced widespread opposition, with critics arguing that the proposed increase was excessive when compared to similar provisions in other states.
Leaders from across political parties reportedly urged the government to reconsider the move, leading to the present decision to withdraw the Bill.
The step is being seen as an effort by the government to address public concerns and ensure a balanced approach to governance and fiscal priorities.
