Odisha Govt Withdraws Proposal to Serve Liquor in Beach Shacks, Reinforces Liquor Ban in Religious Areas

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has withdraws its proposal to permit the sale of liquor in beach shacks on Puri beach, emphasizing a reinforced liquor ban in areas of socio-religious-cultural significance. The decision, announced through a notification by the Excise Department, reflects the government’s commitment to preserving the religious and cultural sanctity of these locations.

New Notification and Policy Changes

According to the latest notification, the Odisha government has decided against allowing the sale of liquor in beach shacks located within Puri Municipality and within a 5 km radius of any other significant socio-religious-cultural sites across the state. This policy shift underscores the government’s stance on maintaining the cultural and religious values associated with these areas, particularly highlighting the sanctity of Puri, the revered abode of Lord Jagannath.

Earlier, the Tourism Department had issued licenses allowing the sale of liquor in beach shacks as part of a broader strategy to promote tourism. However, the new notification clarifies that such measures are inconsistent with the socio-religious-cultural importance of the region.

Preservation of Socio-Religious Significance

The notification explicitly states that no new licenses will be granted for operating beach shacks in Puri Municipality or within the specified 5 km radius of other culturally significant locations in Odisha. This move aims to uphold the region’s revered status and respect the traditions associated with these sacred spaces.

By reinforcing the liquor ban in these areas, the Odisha government seeks to balance tourism development with the need to preserve the cultural and religious integrity of the state’s significant landmarks. The decision reflects a broader commitment to maintaining the socio-religious fabric of Odisha while managing tourism in a manner that respects local values and traditions.
