Odisha Govt to Establish Medical College in Jagatsinghpur

Bhubaneswar: In a major boost to healthcare infrastructure, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced that the Odisha government will establish a medical college in Jagatsinghpur district. The announcement was made during discussions on the Appropriation Bill in the Odisha Assembly today.

Industries Minister and Paradeep MLA Sampad Chandra Swain confirmed the development, adding that the government is also taking steps to establish an airfield in Jagatsinghpur.

This initiative aligns with the state government’s commitment to setting up medical colleges in every district within the next five years, a vision previously outlined in its healthcare expansion plan.

The establishment of medical colleges in each district is part of a nationwide initiative launched by the Union Government in 2014, under which medical colleges are to be built with a 60:40 cost-sharing model between the Centre and the state governments.

Currently, Odisha has 13 government medical colleges, all affiliated with the Odisha University of Health Sciences (OUHS). The addition of a medical college in Jagatsinghpur is expected to significantly improve healthcare access and medical education opportunities in the region.
