Odisha Gears Up for International Shree-Anna Conference to Highlight Traditional Crops

Bhubaneswar: The stage is set for the upcoming International Shree-Anna Conference as a preparatory meeting, chaired by Deputy Chief Minister and Agriculture Minister KV Singh Deo, took place today. The conference, focused on promoting traditional food grains like millet, will coincide with International Millet Day. The objective is to boost awareness about endangered crops while supporting farmers’ livelihoods and preserving Odisha’s rich agricultural legacy.

Minister Singh Deo underscored the significance of reconnecting the youth with traditional grains. “We must revitalize interest in these crops, not only to safeguard our heritage but also to uplift farmers’ incomes and sustain future agricultural practices,” he noted.

The meeting highlighted plans to feature one or more traditional grains, vegetables, or fruits from every district in Odisha during the conference. The goal is to increase consumer demand for these crops, encouraging farmers across the state to invest in growing traditional varieties, the Deputy CM explained.

Agriculture Department Principal Secretary Dr. Arabinda Kumar Padhee emphasized the need for a comprehensive plan to celebrate Millet Day at the block, district, and state levels. He announced the creation of Millet Service Centres where millet-based products will be displayed and sold, and highlighted the state government’s initiative to provide an 80% subsidy for establishing these centres.

Additionally, Dr. Padhee focused on the importance of promoting organic farming through the Odisha Balabhadra Jaibika Chasa Mission. He expressed optimism about Odisha emerging as a leader in preserving traditional agricultural methods in the years to come.
