Odisha Declares Hindi Film ‘The Sabarmati Report’ Tax-Free

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has declared the Hindi film The Sabarmati Report tax-free in the state. The movie, which portrays the 2002 Godhra train burning incident in Gujarat, aims to shed light on the tragic event and its repercussions.

The announcement was made by the Chief Minister on his X handle, where he emphasized the significance of the film in raising awareness about the heart-wrenching incident. “The government has decided to make the film The Sabarmati Report, based on a true incident, tax-free in Odisha. The film reveals how Kar Sevaks were burnt alive in the Godhra fire incident to serve vested interests and create instability. This will bring the truth of a tragic chapter to the people and enhance public awareness,” CM Majhi wrote.

Odisha joins six other BJP-ruled states—Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat—that have already exempted the Vikrant Massey and Raashii Khanna-starrer from entertainment tax.

Renowned filmmaker Ektaa Kapoor, associated with the project, expressed her gratitude to the Odisha Chief Minister and government. “Heartfelt gratitude to Hon’ble Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi Ji and the Government of Odisha for making The Sabarmati Report tax-free in the state. This support will help bring the truth of a significant chapter in our history to more people,” she posted on X.

The Sabarmati Report delves into the tragic 2002 Godhra train burning incident, where several Kar Sevaks lost their lives. The film seeks to present an account of the event and its implications, offering viewers a chance to reflect on a pivotal moment in India’s recent history.
