Kendrapada: A Plus III final-year student tragically lost her life in a suspicious fire incident at her residence in Kathiapada village under Pattamundai block of Kendrapada district on Wednesday. The circumstances surrounding her death have raised serious concerns, with her family alleging blackmail and police apathy.
According to initial reports, the young woman was alone at home when the fire broke out. By the time her family returned, she had already succumbed to the blaze. Locals and family members described the incident as deeply suspicious and have demanded a thorough investigation.
The victim’s father has alleged that his daughter had been facing harassment from a former acquaintance who was blackmailing her with explicit photos and videos. The youth had reportedly been tormenting her even after their relationship ended, pushing her into severe distress.
Family members claimed that the victim had approached the police for help, but her complaint received little attention. Officers allegedly advised her to block the threatening number, without initiating any formal probe into the matter. This alleged inaction has sparked outrage in the local community.
Taking note of the gravity of the situation, Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) Y B Khurania has ordered the Kendrapada Superintendent of Police to visit the site and ensure a prompt and impartial investigation. The DGP has also sought a detailed report on both the incident and the earlier complaint lodged by the victim.
Pattamundai police have begun investigating the case, and forensic teams are expected to assist in determining whether the death was a case of suicide or foul play.
This marks the third suspected self-immolation case involving young women in Odisha in the last month, following similar incidents in Balasore and Puri districts. These repeated tragedies have sparked growing demands for stronger protections for women and a more accountable policing system.
