Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi conducted a comprehensive review of the Steel and Mines Department’s work procedures on Tuesday, emphasizing the need for enhanced production and revenue generation from the state’s mineral resources.
During the meeting, Surendra Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary to the Government for Steel and Mines, provided a detailed overview of the department’s current operations and future objectives. The review highlighted the department’s focus on managing mines efficiently and bolstering output to support mining-based industries.
Chief Minister Majhi stressed the critical importance of increasing mining production to further fuel Odisha’s economy, which heavily relies on its rich mineral reserves. He also directed the department to implement stronger measures for boosting mining revenue, particularly by reinforcing the enforcement system to combat illegal mining and mineral theft. This will involve deploying additional manpower to safeguard the state’s resources.
The Chief Minister suggested expanding leasing in the minor minerals sector, which could open up new opportunities for local industries and contribute to the state’s growth.
Odisha holds a leading position in the country’s mining sector. With an observed geological potential covering 55,003 square kilometers, the state ranks first in the production of chromite, bauxite, and iron ore. It is also the second-largest coal producer and third in manganese production in India.
The meeting was attended by key officials, including Steel and Mines, Commerce and Transport Minister Bibhuthi Bhushan Jena, Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, and Nikunja Bihari Dhal, Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister, along with senior officers from the Steel and Mines Department.
