Odisha CM Reviews State’s Aviation Push, Focuses on Upgrading Infrastructure and Regional Connectivity

Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi chaired a high-level meeting at Lok Seva Bhawan on Wednesday to review the ongoing and proposed aviation infrastructure projects across the state. With a focus on “Aviation and Network Construction Management,” the meeting sought to accelerate development and enhance regional air connectivity in Odisha.

At the centre of the discussions was the progress of key airport initiatives, including the much-anticipated Shri Jagannath International Airport (SJIA) in Puri, the upgradation of Rourkela Airport, and the proposal for a new greenfield airport in Paradip. The Chief Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to building world-class aviation infrastructure and stressed the strategic importance of these projects in boosting tourism, trade, and overall economic growth.

The meeting also highlighted the state’s plans to upgrade several regional airports such as Jaypur, Dand Bose, Rangeilunda, Gotama, Satibhita, Raisuan, Thusuara, Jamadarpali, Malkangiri, Amarda Road, and Utkela. Additionally, the government is planning the construction of heliports in 15 districts to improve aerial access to remote and underserved regions.

Another key focus area was the development of the Biju Patnaik Aviation Centre (BPAC) at the Birashola airstrip in Dhenkanal, envisioned as a hub for aviation training and operations. The Chief Minister emphasized the need for coordinated efforts to scale up aviation infrastructure, and designated the Works Department as the nodal agency to streamline and expedite project implementation.

Deliberations also included proposals to restructure the Directorate of Civil Aviation with an aim to modernize the department and enhance its human resource capacity. The CM directed officials to explore innovative models for aviation growth, including establishing drone hubs and improving the operational efficiency of aviation units.

“We must ensure that Odisha is well-positioned for the future of aviation. The expansion of airports and creation of new aviation facilities is not just about connectivity, but about empowering people, attracting investment, and supporting emergency services across the state,” said Chief Minister Majhi.

The meeting was attended by several top state officials including Commerce and Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena, Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, Development Commissioner Anu Garg, Additional Chief Secretary to the CM Nikunj Bihari Dhal, Additional Chief Secretary for Industries Hemant Sharma, Principal Secretary of Commerce and Transport Usha Padhi, Finance Secretary Shashwat Mishra, Works Secretary Veer Bikram Yadav, MD of EPICL Bhupinder Singh Punia, and Director of Civil Aviation Debudatta Suranjita Jena.
