Odisha CM Increases Compensation for Wildlife Attack Victims to ₹10 Lakh

Bhubaneswar: In a major move to support families affected by human-wildlife conflicts, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced an increase in the compensation for deaths caused by wildlife attacks from ₹6 lakh to ₹10 lakh.

The decision comes as a significant relief to villagers living in close proximity to forest areas, who frequently bear the brunt of animal incursions, resulting in tragic loss of life and damage to homes and property.

“People living near forests often face unexpected encounters with wild animals that disrupt lives and livelihoods. Our government is committed to standing with these communities in their hour of need,” the Chief Minister said.

According to the new policy, bereaved families will receive ₹10 lakh as ex-gratia in the event of a wildlife-related fatality.

Beyond fatalities, the revised package also addresses property damage. If a residential house is destroyed or rendered uninhabitable, the affected household will be provided a new home under the Antyodaya Housing Scheme or be given financial support equivalent to its construction cost.

For partial damage involving essential structures, the state will offer additional relief:

  • ₹3,000 will be given for damage to kitchens, grain storage rooms, or cattle sheds.

  • For damage to concrete or compound walls, a compensation of ₹5,000 per meter — up to a maximum of ₹25,000 — will be provided.

The enhanced compensation package reflects the state government’s increasing focus on balancing conservation efforts with the welfare of forest-dependent communities. It is also expected to improve the reporting of such incidents and encourage prompt rehabilitation.
