Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Thursday approved a substantial increase in uniform allowances and extra duty incentives for police personnel across the state. The decision reflects the state government’s commitment to building a more responsive, motivated, and people-centric policing system.
As per an official press release, the annual uniform allowance for personnel from constables to inspectors has been doubled. Inspectors will now receive ₹8,600 per year, up from the previous ₹4,300. Sub-inspectors and assistant sub-inspectors will get ₹8,400, compared to the earlier ₹4,200. For havildars, constables, and sepoys, the allowance has been raised from ₹5,000 to ₹10,000. Ex-army personnel serving in the Special Striking Force will now receive ₹11,800 annually, up from ₹5,900. Personnel and officers holding equivalent ranks will also benefit from these revised rates.
The annual Extra Duty Incentive has also seen a substantial rise. Constables, sepoys, and those in similar ranks can now receive a maximum of ₹25,000, while havildars and their equivalents will be eligible for up to ₹30,000 annually. These enhancements are expected to recognize the demanding nature of police work and encourage better service delivery.
Following the announcement, representatives from the Constable, Havildar, and Sepoy associations met with the Chief Minister at Lok Seva Bhavan to express their gratitude. On this occasion, Chief Minister Majhi encouraged police personnel to continue working diligently and rise to the expectations of the people of Odisha. He urged them to ensure timely assistance to the helpless, quick protection for vulnerable individuals, immediate registration of FIRs, and prompt investigations to strengthen public trust in law enforcement.
Reaffirming the government’s dedication to strengthening the police force, the Chief Minister announced the creation of 16,059 new posts in the police department. In addition, nearly 16,000 existing vacancies will be filled. Once implemented, this massive recruitment drive will significantly increase the police presence across the state, enhancing law enforcement capabilities in proportion to Odisha’s growing population.
Chief Minister Majhi also emphasized the need for police personnel to undergo training in other states to learn from best practices and modern operational methods. He stressed that Odisha’s police must continuously evolve to become a model force known for peace, discipline, and prompt service.
The meeting began with a welcome address by Director General of Police Y.B. Khurania, who thanked the Chief Minister for taking bold steps to empower all segments of the police department. Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister Nikunja Bihari Dhal, Additional Chief Secretary of the Home Department Satyabrata Sahu, and several senior police officials were also present.
Anil Kumar Sandha, President of the Constable, Havildar, and Sepoy Association, expressed his appreciation to the Chief Minister. Association secretary Kishore Kumar Mohanty and other members also attended the meeting, marking the occasion as a moment of renewed resolve within the police fraternity.
