Bhubaneswar: To boost fisheries sector, the Odisha Cabinet on Wednesday approved the State Sector umbrella scheme, Mukhyamantri Maschyajibi Kalyan Yojana (MMKY). Set to be implemented from the financial year 2024-25 through 2028-29, the scheme will cover all sectors of fisheries, with a total budget allocation of nearly ₹2,239 crore.

The MMKY scheme includes 17 sub-schemes targeting the growth and sustainability of Odisha’s freshwater, brackish water, and marine fisheries. Its goal is to increase fish production and exports, thereby elevating the income of fishers across the state. An estimated 14 lakh individuals will benefit from the scheme, including 6,67,500 fishers and 7,32,500 members of women’s self-help groups (WSHGs).

According to an official press release, the MMKY initiative is expected to transform the fisheries sector by supporting various projects and infrastructure development over the next five years, ultimately contributing to Odisha’s rural economy and the livelihoods of the state’s fishing community.

Details on the 17 sub-schemes, budget distribution, and number of fishers and WSHG members to be covered under each initiative will be outlined in the comprehensive plan, underscoring the state’s commitment to supporting this vital sector.
