Odisha Cabinet approves ₹600-crore scheme for 508 Bridge-cum-Weir projects

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Cabinet has approved a new Bridge-cum-Weir scheme with an outlay of ₹600 crore to strengthen water conservation and improve irrigation and drinking water availability in rural areas by creating water storage structures across the state.

The programme, proposed by the Rural Development Department, will be implemented over five years from 2026-27 to 2030-31. During this period, 508 new Bridge-cum-Weir structures will be constructed, while 162 ongoing projects will also be completed.

According to the government, the structures will help impound monsoon water in streams and upstream of bridges, ensuring its availability beyond the rainy season. The stored water will be used for minor irrigation, domestic purposes and livestock, benefiting villages that frequently face water shortages during the summer months.

Officials said the initiative is expected to improve agricultural productivity, strengthen rural water security and ensure better utilisation of rainwater. It will also support the state’s efforts to enhance climate resilience through sustainable water resource management.

Following the Cabinet’s approval, the Rural Development Department will implement the projects in a phased manner across Odisha. The government expects the programme to provide long-term benefits by improving water availability and supporting the livelihoods of rural communities.
