Bhubaneswar: Bangalore-based Odia designer Sujit Meher who has been promoting Odisha handloom with various designer garments, has been awarded with the ‘Best Designer For Social Impact’ award from Star India.
The award ceremony was scheduled to be held in April in Mumbai, however due to the pandemic ceremony was held virtually recently.
Overwhelmed on being conferred with the award, Sujit said, “I am happy with the recognition. I have been trying to promote Odisha handloom through my designer work on various national and international platforms, which I also believe will help to empower our weavers. I am planning to involve more weavers.”
Sujit has been working with various weavers from western Odisha, Gopalpur, Berhampur and Nuapatna and infusing the traditional Odisha handloom to make trendy designer dresses for women and men.
“We have planned to use tussar fabrics from Gopalpur, Berhampur and Nuapatna pata to give a grand look to the wedding collections,” he said.
