Nithya Menen Explores the Power of Nuance in Acting at IFFI 2024

Goa: National Award-winning actress Nithya Menen captivated audiences with her profound insights on the art of acting during the In-Conversation session titled ‘Character and Actor: The Power of Nuance’ at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) at Kala Academy in Panaji, Goa. Known for her emotionally resonant performances in films like Thiruchitrambalam and OK Kanmani, Nithya shared her unique approach to portraying complex characters with subtlety and authenticity.

During the session, Nithya discussed the importance of emotional authenticity in her performances, highlighting how it shapes the characters she portrays on screen. “Acting is about emotional connection, not personal experience,” she explained, emphasizing that portraying a role, like that of a mother, requires empathy and emotional intelligence rather than lived experience. This emotional depth, she added, is what allows her to create universally relatable characters, regardless of the cultural or regional context.

Reflecting on her own journey as an actor, Nithya revealed that her process for selecting roles has evolved over time. She recalled past criticism for choosing “lighter” roles but explained that her approach to acting is more instinctive than methodical. “I don’t follow a formal method acting approach,” she said. “Instead, I observe the world, visualize scenes, and connect intuitively with the characters. It’s all about trusting the process.”

Nithya also delved into the challenges of portraying real-world characters with nuance. She admitted that earlier in her career, she found it easier to express sadness and emotional pain. “I had so much agony in me, and certain emotional scenes were cathartic. I used to feel a huge sense of relief after the shot,” she recalled. However, as she has grown, she finds it harder to cry. “Maybe I’m becoming a happier person as I grow,” she said with a smile, emphasizing that emotional authenticity is what truly matters in her craft.

Discussing the importance of emotional openness in her acting, Nithya emphasized that flexibility and confidence are crucial for an actor’s performance. She shared that a quiet and focused environment is essential for accessing deep emotions, as actors need to feel at ease to fully connect with their characters. “Rigidity and lack of confidence hinder an actor’s performance,” she noted, adding that being open to people and experiences enriches the work.

The actress also spoke about the evolving landscape of women in cinema, acknowledging that the industry has become more inclusive and accepting of female talent. “There are more opportunities now, and greater respect for women in the industry,” she observed.

In conclusion, Nithya highlighted the profound responsibility that films have in shaping the emotional and intellectual landscape of audiences. “The purpose of a film is to stir the consciousness of its audience,” she said. “If a film fails to engage emotionally or intellectually, it loses its significance.”

Her insightful conversation not only shed light on the intricacies of acting but also reaffirmed her commitment to portraying characters that resonate with truth, empathy, and emotional depth.
