NHRC Invites Entries for 11th Annual Short Film Competition on Human Rights

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has announced the launch of its 11th annual Short Film Competition, inviting entries from citizens across the country to creatively depict various aspects of human rights. The last date for submission of entries is August 31, 2025.

Launched in 2015, this unique initiative aims to foster cinematic expression on critical human rights issues and recognize the contributions of filmmakers in raising awareness. Open to Indian citizens of all age groups, the competition has consistently received an enthusiastic response from participants nationwide.

The short films can be produced in English or any Indian language, but must include English subtitles. Each entry should be between 3 to 10 minutes long, and may be presented in the form of documentaries, dramatizations, fictional stories, or animations. Submissions must address a wide array of human rights concerns, including but not limited to:

  • Right to life, dignity, and equality
  • Child and bonded labour, and rights of women and children
  • Rights of elderly persons and persons with disabilities
  • Manual scavenging, healthcare access, custodial violence
  • Domestic violence, human trafficking, police atrocities
  • Socio-economic disparities and environmental justice
  • Prison reforms, LGBTQI+ rights, and rights of displaced persons
  • Celebrating diversity and development-driven change

There is no entry fee, and participants may submit multiple films, provided each is accompanied by a separate, duly filled-in entry form.

Completed entries, including the film and relevant documents, should be submitted via Google Drive to nhrcshortfilm[at]gmail[dot]com. This email address may also be used for any queries regarding the competition.

The selected films will be awarded and recognized for their contribution to promoting human rights awareness and advocacy through the power of storytelling.
