New Delhi: NHPC Limited, India’s premier hydropower company, has been awarded Navratna status by the Government of India, marking a significant milestone in its growth trajectory. The Department of Public Enterprise, under the Ministry of Finance, conferred this prestigious status, providing NHPC with greater operational and financial autonomy.
R.K. Chaudhary, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NHPC, hailed the recognition as a “historic moment” for the company. “This honor reflects our remarkable financial and operational accomplishments,” he stated. Shri Chaudhary expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Power for their unwavering trust and support, which played a key role in NHPC receiving this accolade.
The newly acquired Navratna status brings several strategic advantages for NHPC. It grants the company enhanced decision-making capabilities, boosting efficiency and empowering its workforce. The status also provides NHPC with increased flexibility in executing capital expenditure (CAPEX) plans, expanding market reach, and achieving long-term growth. NHPC will now have greater powers to establish joint ventures, open overseas offices, and access new markets, helping to strengthen its market position and foster innovation.
Currently, NHPC has an installed capacity of 7,144.20 MW, with ongoing projects that will add another 10,442.70 MW to its portfolio. Key projects under construction include the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower project (Assam/Arunachal Pradesh) and the 2,880 MW Dibang Multi-purpose project (Arunachal Pradesh). The company has ambitious plans, aiming to achieve an installed capacity of 23,000 MW by 2032 and 50,000 MW by 2047.
