Neeraj Chopra to Return to Paavo Nurmi Games Amidst High-Quality Competition

New Delhi: Reigning Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra is set to make his return to the Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku, Finland on June 18, as announced by the organisers on Wednesday. The prestigious event, held in honor of Finnish athletics legend Paavo Nurmi, is designated as a top-tier World Athletics competition under the Continental Tour Gold series.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, the organisers expressed their anticipation for hosting a highly competitive javelin competition, aiming to assemble the strongest field of competitors ahead of the Paris Olympics. “Olympic champion @Neeraj_chopra1 returns to Turku in June and will face a high-quality field of competitors. The goal is to host the most competitive javelin competition of the summer before the Paris Olympics,” the post read.

Chopra, who clinched a silver medal at the Paavo Nurmi Games in 2022 with a throw of 89.30m, missed last year’s edition due to injury. His return to the event signifies his intent to reclaim his dominance on the international stage.

The lineup for this year’s event boasts formidable competition, including Germany’s Max Dehning, who recently achieved a milestone by becoming the youngest javelin thrower to surpass the coveted 90m mark with a throw of 90.20m, currently the world-leading mark. Joining him is Julian Weber, the reigning European champion and fourth-place finisher at the Tokyo Olympics.

The Paavo Nurmi Games will mark Chopra’s second event of the year, following his participation in the Doha Diamond League meet scheduled for May 10. As the reigning world champion and Olympic gold medalist, Chopra’s return to the Paavo Nurmi Games promises to ignite excitement among athletics enthusiasts worldwide as he prepares to showcase his prowess on the global stage once again.
