Doha: Olympic and world champion Neeraj Chopra narrowly missed out on the top spot at the Doha Diamond League javelin throw event on Friday. Despite a valiant effort, his final throw of 88.36m fell just two centimeters short of Czech Republic veteran Jakub Vadlejch’s winning effort of 88.38m.
Throughout the competition, the 26-year-old Chopra trailed Vadlejch, who maintained a consistent lead. Despite a fierce battle, Chopra’s determined final-round throw wasn’t enough to defend the title he had claimed in the previous year’s event. Two-time world champion Anderson Peters secured third place with a best throw of 86.62m, adding to the intense competition among the world’s top javelin throwers.
However, it was a disappointing Diamond League debut for Kishore Jena, who was eliminated after three rounds of throws, with his best effort reaching 76.31m. The 28-year-old, known for his silver medal win in the Hangzhou Asian Games last year with a personal best of 87.54m, finished ninth after three throws.
Jakub Vadlejch, the eventual winner of the event, had previously showcased his prowess by securing a silver medal in the Tokyo Olympics and a bronze in the 2023 World Championships, similar events where Chopra had clinched gold. Last year, Chopra had emerged victorious at the Doha Diamond League with a remarkable throw of 88.67m, edging past Vadlejch (88.63m) and Peters (85.88m) in a fiercely contested battle.
