NCTE Conducts Virtual Orientation on National Mission for Mentoring and Professional Standards for Teachers

New Delhi: The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), under the directive of the Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL), Ministry of Education, Government of India, successfully conducted a five-day virtual orientation program on the National Mission for Mentoring (NMM) and the National Professional Standards for Teachers (NPST). The program, held from 10-14 June 2024, targeted over 1 lakh teachers from PM SHRI schools across 29 States/UTs/Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS)/Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), aiming to bolster their knowledge and skills for effectively implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

The sessions, each spanning two hours daily, provided comprehensive insights into NMM and NPST, with different states and UTs being covered each day. These initiatives are crafted to support teachers’ professional growth and empower them to lay a robust foundation for their students. To ensure inclusivity, sign language interpreters were engaged throughout the sessions.

Prof. Pankaj Arora, Chairperson of NCTE, and Ms. Kesang Y. Sherpa, Member Secretary of NCTE, set the context for the sessions, emphasizing the significance of both NMM and NPST for PM SHRI school teachers.

The session on the National Mission for Mentoring (NMM) featured a detailed presentation and a technical demonstration of the NMM portal, showcasing the registration process and usage for both mentors and mentees. The presentation highlighted the ongoing support provided by NCTE through the NMM digital portal, which facilitates interaction between mentors and mentees, fostering a collaborative environment for professional development.

In the NPST session, the focus was on empowering teachers by enhancing their understanding of performance expectations and improvement strategies as recommended in the NPST Guiding Document. The session outlined three core standards, teacher levels, and the NPST framework, aimed at the capacity building of in-service teachers. It also provided information about competencies that could help teachers achieve their professional and personal goals.
