Navjyot Bandiwadekar Wins Best Debut Director Award for Gharat Ganpati at IFFI 2024

Goa: Marathi filmmaker Navjyot Bandiwadekar has won the Best Debut Director of an Indian Feature Film Award for his directorial debut, Gharat Ganpati, at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI). The newly instituted award, introduced by the National Film Development Corporation under the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, recognizes emerging talent in Indian cinema and celebrates the contributions of young filmmakers.

The award, presented during the festival’s closing ceremony, includes a certificate and a cash prize of ₹5 lakhs. It highlights Bandiwadekar’s exceptional storytelling skills, marking him as a promising new voice in the Indian film industry.

The jury praised Gharat Ganpati for its compelling exploration of family dynamics and intergenerational unity. “Bandiwadekar has expertly captured the complexities of familial bonds,” they noted in their citation, adding that the film balances tradition and modern sensibilities with emotional depth and humor.

Gharat Ganpati delves into the interpersonal dynamics of a family navigating generational differences, blending lighthearted moments with chaos and emotional resonance. Speaking at a press conference earlier in the festival, Bandiwadekar described the film as a heartfelt exploration of family unity through fun-filled and chaotic situations.

The jury unanimously selected Gharat Ganpati from five shortlisted films, chosen from 117 entries recommended by the preview committee. The decision reflects the jury’s recognition of the film’s well-crafted narrative and strong performances.
