Nationwide Awareness Drive Educates Citizens on EVMs and VVPATs Ahead of 2024 General Elections

New Delhi: As the country gears up for the General Elections to Lok Sabha in 2024, a comprehensive nationwide awareness programme on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) is currently underway. This initiative aims to provide citizens with a hands-on experience of the voting process and familiarize them with the functioning of these crucial electoral technologies.

The primary objective of the awareness programme is to empower citizens by imparting knowledge about the basic features of EVMs and VVPATs. The initiative also focuses on elucidating the step-by-step procedure of casting votes and educating voters on how to verify their choices through the VVPAT slip. The programme spans across 3464 Assembly Constituencies, covering 613 Districts in 31 States/UTs (excluding the 5 states that recently went for polls).

This widespread reach ensures that citizens from diverse regions have the opportunity to understand the voting process thoroughly. Over 3500 demonstration centers have been established, providing citizens with a physical demonstration of EVM and VVPAT functionality. These centers serve as hubs for disseminating information and clarifying any misconceptions regarding the voting process.

To further enhance accessibility, approximately 4250 mobile vans have been deployed to reach remote areas and conduct on-the-go demonstrations.

This approach ensures that even citizens in far-flung regions have access to information about EVMs and VVPATs. Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) and District Electoral Officers (DEOs) are actively utilizing social media platforms to share updates and information related to the awareness programme. This digital outreach enhances the overall impact and ensures that a broader audience is reached.

The physical demonstration of EVM and VVPAT functionality is instrumental in dispelling misconceptions, building voter confidence, and fostering a more informed and participative electorate. By allowing citizens to interact directly with the voting machines, the awareness programme aims to create transparency in the electoral process.

With the General Elections to Lok Sabha 2024 on the horizon, this awareness drive becomes particularly crucial. An informed electorate is fundamental to the democratic process, and initiatives like these play a vital role in ensuring that citizens are well-versed with the voting mechanisms, contributing to a smooth and credible electoral exercise.

As the nationwide awareness programme continues its outreach efforts, it stands as a testament to the commitment of the Election Commission in promoting electoral transparency, participation, and the integrity of the democratic process.
