National School of Drama Outreach Centre to Be Established in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: In a significant boost for the performing arts in Odisha, the state government has approved the establishment of an outreach centre for the National School of Drama (NSD) in Bhubaneswar. Initially, the centre will operate temporarily at the Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Odissi Research Centre.

This initiative is seen as a prestigious milestone for the region, providing a golden opportunity for students aspiring to pursue careers in theatre and acting. Odisha’s Minister for Odia Language, Literature, and Culture, Suryabanshi Suraj, expressed enthusiasm about the new outreach centre, stating it will play a crucial role in promoting and expanding Odia theatre while bringing regional narratives and traditional drama to national and global audiences.

The decision to set up the NSD outreach centre came after consultations between Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Minister Suraj. Highlighting the importance of Odia theatre, Minister Suraj remarked, “Odisha’s rich history, literature, art, and culture have been carried forth through the art of drama, which has narrated the region’s tales for generations. The NSD outreach centre in Bhubaneswar will serve as a catalyst for the growth of Odia theatre productions.”

The Bhubaneswar outreach centre will provide high-quality training, enabling students to showcase Odisha’s theatrical talent on national and international platforms. “This centre will empower aspiring actors and playwrights to gain the skills needed to excel in the field,” Suraj added.

Established in 1959 in Delhi, the National School of Drama has operated as an autonomous body under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, since 1975. Renowned actor Paresh Rawal currently chairs the institution, while distinguished Odia actor Chittaranjan Tripathy serves as its Director. The NSD boasts an impressive roster of alumni, including prominent actors from Odisha such as Bijay Mohanty, Ajit Das, and Surya Mohanty.

The establishment of the NSD outreach centre in Odisha aligns with a vision to promote Odia culture widely, particularly the region’s rich theatrical tradition. With this new initiative, the state aims to nurture local talent and elevate the profile of Odia theatre on a larger stage.
