Ministry of Steel Hosts ‘Greening Steel: Pathway to Sustainability’ Event, Unveils Decarbonization Roadmap

New Delhi: The Ministry of Steel successfully hosted the event ‘Greening Steel: Pathway to Sustainability’ at the C.D. Deshmukh Hall, India International Centre, New Delhi, today. The event saw the participation of representatives from various Ministries, Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs), Think Tanks, Academia, Institutions, and key industry players. The Chief Guest, Union Minister of Steel and Heavy Industries, H. D. Kumaraswamy, released a landmark report titled “Greening the Steel Sector in India: Roadmap and Action Plan”, marking a significant step towards decarbonizing the steel industry in India.

The report, prepared based on the recommendations of 14 Task Forces constituted by the Ministry of Steel, lays out a comprehensive strategy for reducing carbon emissions in the steel sector. The event emphasized the importance of adopting sustainable practices and technologies in alignment with India’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions.

The report focuses on key areas, including:

  • Current State and Challenges: It provides an overview of the Indian steel sector, its carbon footprint, and the obstacles to decarbonization.
  • Key Levers of Decarbonization: These include energy efficiency, renewable energy, material efficiency, process transitions, carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), as well as the use of green hydrogen and biochar.
  • Technological Innovations: It highlights the latest advancements in technology that can significantly reduce emissions.
  • Policy Frameworks: The report examines current policies and suggests enhancements to support the transition to greener practices.
  • Future Outlook: It envisions a sustainable steel industry with contributions from all stakeholders.
  • Roadmap and Action Plan: The report details the strategies required from both the government and industry players to realize these goals.

H. D. Kumaraswamy expressed the Ministry’s dedication to implementing the roadmap and action plan outlined in the report. “The steel sector plays a vital role in India’s economy, but it must also evolve to meet the challenges of climate change. This report is a blueprint for driving the transformation of the Indian steel industry towards a low-carbon future,” he said.

The event opened with an introductory address by Vinod K. Tripathi, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Steel, followed by a presentation on the report by Neha Verma, Director at the Ministry of Steel.

A technical session titled “Leadership and Innovation: Driving the Green Steel Transition”, chaired by Sanjay Singh, Former Secretary of Steel, featured prominent industry leaders and experts, including Dr. Anshu Bharadwaj (Project Director at NITI Aayog), Abhay Bakre (Mission Director at NGHM), and senior executives from leading steel companies such as Tata Steel, SAIL, JSW, and AMNS. The session focused on the role of leadership and innovation in advancing sustainable steel production, with a focus on the importance of visionary leadership and new technologies in shaping the sector’s future.

During the event, the Chairpersons of the Task Forces responsible for compiling the recommendations were felicitated by the Union Minister of Steel and Heavy Industries.

The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks byNeha Verma, who reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to driving a sustainable future for the steel industry. “The decarbonization of the steel sector is not just an environmental necessity but also critical for the long-term viability of the industry,” she said.
