Ministry of Social Justice Hosts ‘Aradhana’ to Celebrate Senior Citizen Artists and Graceful Ageing

New Delhi: The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment held a grand cultural event, ‘Aradhana’, in the capital today, under the theme ‘Celebrating Graceful Ageing – Life Begins at 60’. The event showcased the artistic contributions of senior citizens, emphasizing active ageing and the importance of intergenerational solidarity. Artists aged 60 and above captivated the audience with performances, reinforcing the deep cultural connection between India’s traditions and its elder citizens, who have long been custodians of the nation’s rich artistic heritage.

The event commenced with the traditional lighting of the ceremonial lamp, a devotional invocation, and the National Anthem. Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, B. L. Verma, attended as Chief Guest, while Dr. Aabha Chaudhary, Chairperson of the NGO Anugraha, welcomed the audience, emphasizing the importance of promoting the Guru Shishya Parampara and paying tribute to the elders who have dedicated their lives to preserving Indian art forms.

In his address, B. L. Verma praised the essential role senior citizens play in safeguarding India’s cultural identity. “The essence of our cultural identity is deeply rooted in the knowledge and wisdom of our elders. ‘Aradhana’ is not just a celebration of ageing gracefully but a tribute to the timeless contributions of our senior citizens in sustaining India’s traditions and cultural values,” he stated. The Minister also highlighted the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to ensure senior citizens remain actively engaged in society and continue to live with dignity, respect, and security.

The evening featured a series of captivating performances, with highlights including a soulful vocal recital by renowned classical musician Pt. Sajan Mishra and an enchanting Odissi dance performance by Guru Ranjana Gauhar. These performances demonstrated the enduring beauty of classical Indian arts, while a vibrant ensemble of folk dances from across India celebrated the country’s cultural diversity, illustrating the significant role senior artists play in preserving these traditions.

Dignitaries in attendance reflected on the importance of promoting respect and care for senior citizens, acknowledging their critical role in shaping societal values. The Ministry reiterated its commitment to supporting senior citizens through health, financial security, and social inclusion programs, with ‘Aradhana’ serving as a key platform to highlight these initiatives.

The event concluded with the felicitation of senior artists, honoring their lifelong dedication to preserving India’s cultural legacy. Monali Dhakate, Joint Secretary (DoSJE), delivered a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all participants and acknowledging the collective effort that made the event a success.

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment continues to advocate for the well-being of senior citizens, ensuring their contributions are valued and they lead lives of dignity and fulfillment, remaining actively engaged in both social and cultural spheres.
