Ministry of Mines Hosts Workshop on State Best Practices in Mining

New Delhi: The Ministry of Mines, in collaboration with the Federation of Indian Mineral Industries (FIMI), successfully conducted a one-day workshop focused on the “Study on State Best Practices in Mining” in Delhi. The event drew participation from representatives of 20 states and members of the mining industry, aiming to foster knowledge sharing and collaboration in the sector.

This interactive workshop sought to build a comprehensive understanding of various initiatives and policy reforms implemented by state governments in the mining sector. The primary objective of the study is to assess and identify successful practices that states have adopted, which can serve as models for other regions looking to enhance their mining operations and regulatory frameworks.

The findings from this study will complement the ongoing efforts of the Ministry of Mines to develop a State Mining Index, the framework for which was issued to the states in September for data submission. This index aims to provide a structured assessment of the performance of various states in managing their mineral resources.

The workshop was inaugurated by V. L. Kantha Rao, Secretary of the Ministry of Mines, who delivered the keynote address. In his speech, he highlighted the vital role that state governments play in creating a robust regulatory environment for the mining sector. He underscored the importance of innovative policies, initiatives, and administrative measures in driving sustainable progress within the industry.

“States are crucial to fostering a strong regulatory environment that promotes impactful growth in the mining sector. Your active participation in this study is essential for its success,” Rao stated, encouraging representatives to share their experiences and best practices. He emphasized that knowledge exchange would lead to more effective governance and operational efficiency across the mining industry.

The workshop included discussions on various best practices implemented by different states, covering areas such as regulatory frameworks, environmental management, and community engagement in mining activities. Representatives from the states shared insights on their unique challenges and solutions, fostering an atmosphere of collaboration and learning.

Participants expressed enthusiasm about the potential for adopting successful practices from other states, emphasizing the workshop’s role in creating a unified approach towards mining governance in India. By showcasing successful initiatives, the workshop aimed to inspire continuous improvement and innovation within the sector.

The Ministry of Mines and FIMI plan to utilize the insights gained from this workshop to further refine the State Mining Index and promote a culture of excellence in mining practices across India. The event marks a significant step towards enhancing collaboration between state governments and the mining industry, ultimately contributing to sustainable growth in the sector.
