Ministry of Coal Witnesses Remarkable Surge in Coal Production, Reinforces Commitment to Energy Independence

New Delhi: In a remarkable achievement, there has been a significant month-on-month (m-o-m) and year-on-year (y-o-y) surge in coal production and dispatch from captive and commercial mines. The data for the period from April 1 to February 29, 2024, reveals a robust increase, demonstrating enhanced efficiency and a robust logistics network.

The total coal production during this period reached 126.80 million metric tons (MT), marking a substantial growth of 27.06% compared to the same period in the fiscal year 2022-23. Simultaneously, the dispatch from captive and commercial coal mines saw a commendable increase of 29.14%, reaching 128.88 MT.

As of February 29, 2024, the total number of producing mines stood at 54, with 35 allocated to the Power sector, 11 to the Non-Regulated Sector, and 8 allocated for the Sale of Coal. Notably, 91 mines have been successfully auctioned under Commercial Coal Auctions, with 7 mines already commencing coal production.

In the month of February 2024 alone, the total coal production and dispatch stood at 14.85 MT and 12.95 MT, registering a remarkable growth of 37% and 33%, respectively, compared to the same month in FY 2022-23. The average daily coal production and dispatch rate exhibited consistent performance, reaching 5.12 MT and 4.46 MT per day, respectively.

This remarkable growth underscores the Ministry of Coal’s unwavering commitment to ensuring India’s energy security and reducing the country’s reliance on imported coal. These efforts align with the government’s initiative to promote self-reliance and support the ‘Make in India’ campaign.

The Ministry of Coal attributes this success to the strategic implementation of policy reforms and the relentless dedication of the mine allottees. With a focus on sustaining this growth trajectory, the ministry aims to further streamline operations and bolster infrastructure to meet the rising energy demands of the nation. This surge in coal production and dispatch is a positive stride toward a self-reliant and energy-secure India.
