Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) Marks 250th Foundation Day with Grand Celebrations

Mumbai: Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), a beacon of India’s maritime prowess, is celebrating a monumental milestone today as it commemorates its 250th Foundation Day. To honor this historic occasion, a series of grand events were organized in Mumbai, graced by the esteemed presence of Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane.

The celebrations commenced with the inauguration of adjacent land acquired from the Mumbai Port Authority (MPA), signifying a significant expansion in MDL’s infrastructure. This expansion will facilitate the simultaneous construction and outfitting of new vessels, further enhancing MDL’s capabilities in shipbuilding and repair.

A highlight of the day was the unveiling of a prototype of the indigenous midget submarine named ‘Arowana’ by Giridhar Aramane. This marks a significant milestone in MDL’s journey towards indigenization and self-reliance in submarine technology. With the successful completion of the platform design and hull of ‘Arowana,’ MDL reaffirms its commitment to innovation and excellence in naval engineering.

In a nod to sustainability and environmental stewardship, the Defence Secretary commissioned the Solar Electric Hybrid boat and the Fuel Cell Electric Ferry, both developed with indigenous technology partners. These eco-friendly vessels not only offer superior performance but also contribute to cleaner waterways and environmental conservation.

Speaking at the event, Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane hailed MDL as a precious jewel of India, lauding its significant contributions to the nation’s economy and security. He emphasized the pivotal role played by MDL in bolstering India’s naval capabilities and highlighted the importance of achieving self-reliance in shipbuilding technology.

Underscoring India’s central role in the Indo-Pacific region, Aramane reiterated the need for strengthening the country’s shipbuilding capabilities. He urged MDL to collaborate with the private sector and build consortia to cater to both domestic and international demand for cutting-edge naval vessels.

The Defence Secretary also inaugurated a Technical Seminar on ‘Emerging Technologies and Future of Shipbuilding,’ showcasing MDL’s commitment to staying at the forefront of technological innovation. Additionally, a commemorative coin, issued by the Reserve Bank of India, was unveiled to honor MDL’s rich legacy and enduring contribution to India’s maritime heritage.

From its humble beginnings in a small dry dock in 1774 to its current stature as a leading shipbuilding enterprise, MDL’s journey over the past 250 years is a testament to its resilience, growth, and enduring legacy. As MDL looks ahead to the future, it remains steadfast in its commitment to excellence, innovation, and service to the nation.
