Manoj Bajpayee Illuminates IFFI 2024 with Despatch and Insights on Cinema

Goa: Acclaimed actor and Padma Shri awardee Manoj Bajpayee, a stalwart of Indian cinema with four National Awards to his name, made a significant impact at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI). His much-anticipated film, Despatch, featured under the ‘Special Presentations’ category, drawing attention to its compelling narrative and the artistry behind its creation.

During a press conference organized by the Press Information Bureau, Bajpayee was joined by director Kannu Behl, co-writer Ishani Banerjee, and actress Shahana Goswami. Together, they shared the creative journey and challenges of bringing Despatch to life.

Bajpayee recounted the film’s tumultuous production, which began during the pandemic. “Shooting during the Delta wave in Mumbai was a humongous challenge. Many of us contracted the virus but returned to complete the film, overcoming tremendous obstacles,” he shared.

He praised the script, co-written by Behl and Banerjee, calling it “incredibly real and captivating.” Reflecting on his role as Joy, a journalist grappling with ambition, corruption, and personal turmoil, Bajpayee said, “The workshops and preparation were mentally taxing but deeply rewarding. It’s a story that captures the high stakes of journalism and its impact on personal lives.”

Despatch, set to release on December 13, 2024, unravels the life of Joy, a crime editor immersed in a career-defining investigation that exposes corruption linked to gang wars. Alongside professional challenges, Joy’s personal life collapses, leading to devastating consequences. The film offers a profound exploration of ambition, greed, and the personal cost of professional pursuits.

Bajpayee further captivated audiences during an In-Conversation session moderated by noted film critic Sudhir Srinivasan. In a candid dialogue, the actor shared insights into his craft and philosophy.

“I see my role as representing people, touching them deeply, and reflecting their realities. Acting is the most difficult job in the world because it demands portraying another person authentically,” Bajpayee remarked.

He emphasized the need to remain connected to society. “If I keep my car’s windows black, how can I observe people, their sorrows, and happiness? Remaining unseen allows me to truly connect and portray characters authentically,” he said.

Expressing concern over current challenges in society and the film industry, Bajpayee championed the cause of independent cinema. “Independent cinema stays true to the art. It’s time to mentor it, as it’s essential for the growth of Indian cinema. Without it, cinema risks becoming mere business,” he asserted.

Known for his dynamic range, Bajpayee reiterated his commitment to exploring diverse roles and genres. “I refuse to be confined by mainstream cinema or any particular genre. Each role is an opportunity to bring something unique to the table,” he said.

Manoj Bajpayee’s engagement at IFFI 2024 underscored his dedication to the craft of acting and the transformative power of storytelling. Whether through the gripping narrative of Despatch or his thought-provoking reflections, he reaffirmed his position as one of Indian cinema’s most compelling voices.
