Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar is no more

Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar breathed her last at the Breach Candy Hospital today.

Her health condition deteriorated again on Saturday, doctors put her back on ventilator support. As per the doctors, the 92 year old Lata was responding to the treatments.

She was admitted to the hospital on January 9 after she tested Covid positive and was on ventilator support. She was taken off the ventilator on January 27. Though she recovered from Covid, her condition remained critical due to other health issues.

Mourning the demise of the legendary singer, President Ram Nath Kovind  wrote in his tweet, “Lata-ji’s demise is heart-breaking for me, as it is for millions the world over. In her vast range of songs, rendering the essence and beauty of India, generations found expression of their inner-most emotions. A Bharat Ratna, Lata-ji’s accomplishments will remain incomparable.”

In her singing career of over 8 decades, she has recorded more than 30000 songs in over thirty-six Indian languages and few foreign languages.

In 1989 she was conferred with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. In 2001, she was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour for her contribution to the nation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his tweet wrote ‘Anguished beyond words’. “The kind and caring Lata Didi has left us. She leaves a void in our nation that cannot be filled. The coming generations will remember her as a stalwart of Indian culture, whose melodious voice had an unparalleled ability to mesmerise people,” he wrote.
